Group Admins
We are raising $30,000 to sponsor a refugee family. 100% of your donation will go to pay for the family’s rent, food, and other basic needs. This donation will be 30% matched by the Canadian Government for their first year in Canada. You will receive a charitable donation tax receipt.
The Group's Purpose
We will raise $30,000 to sponsor a refugee family of 4 and get them to Vancouver, Canada by Easter. We will use the federal government's fast-tracked sponsorship process (Blended Visa Office-Referred or BVOR) to make this happen.
How to Help
We need your generous donations. If you can ask your friends and family for donations also, that would be wonderful. When the refugee family arrives, we need your help as a volunteer to orient our new friends to life in Canada -- everything from setting up bank accounts to registering in school to ESL classes to finding winter clothes and household items. Your welcome, hospitality and friendship are also needed.
About the Organizers
This group began when Ged McLean realized that we all want to do something to help refugees but get stuck not knowing where to start. He realized we need to start with the money and that the logistics will fall into place once we get over this hurdle. He began by asking fellow 'musicians' in a traditional music group he belongs to help him raise the money to support a family. The response was unanimously positive! The group has grown rapidly. Now friends at Kitsilano Christian Community Church are involved. Kits Church is part of the Canadian Baptists of Western Canada: one of only 90 organizations recognized by the federal government as a Sponsorship Agreement Holder for the BVOR program. Kits Church will manage the funds to make sure a refugee family is sponsored in accordance with the BVOR requirements, and will ensure donors get tax receipts.
