With one in two Albertans being diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and one in four not surviving, we are often asked, “How can I help?” From becoming a monthly donor, to holding a fundraising event, to making a major gift or leaving a gift in your will, there are many different ways to give – to help. Regardless of the type of gift you choose to make, the most impactful way to support Albertans facing cancer is by donating to our Priority Needs fund.
What does this mean? Simply put, undesignated funds allow the Alberta Cancer Foundation to remain flexible in a world full of change. These funds can provide immediate impact by allowing us to respond to what cancer patients need today rather than having to wait for fundraising campaigns to be completed tomorrow. After all, new cancer treatments, research, support systems and ideas are being developed every single day. And, Albertans deserve access to the very best in treatment and care, close to home, as soon as it is available. Because, with cancer, every moment counts and everything we do, we do with one goal in mind: to create more moments for Albertans facing cancer.
Your support of our Priority Needs fund will allow us to respond quickly when cutting edge research comes to light or when costly equipment must be replaced at each of the 17 cancer centres across the province. Such gifts support patients whose cancer journey has put them in a financial bind, and others who have ran out of all other treatment options and are turning to a clinical trial as a last resort, a last hope.
Because, as the past few years have highlighted, you never know what tomorrow will bring. But, what we do know is that a gift to our Priority Needs fund will provide us with the agility to better help Albertans facing cancer and move us one step closer to a cancer-free future.
So, how can you help? Make a gift to our Priority Needs fund today.
When all other treatments have been exhausted, clinical trials can provide hope. Clinical trials are research studies that test the safety and effectiveness of new cancer medications and procedures. They often lead to new and improved methods of preventing, detecting and treating the disease. Although specific trial outcomes cannot be guaranteed, there is always gained medical knowledge, which contributes to improved standards of cancer care here in Alberta and around the world. Today’s standard cancer treatments would not be available had they not gone through the clinical trial process first. To date, notable outcomes of clinical trials include less invasive surgical techniques, drugs with fewer side effects, and treatments that improve patient outcomes. These outcomes benefit today’s trial participants and countless others facing cancer in the future.
The challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis often extend beyond medical treatment—such as navigating a complex health-care system and trying to make ends meet while going through treatments. These challenges can increase for people with low income, no employee health insurance, and those who live in rural or remote areas. The Alberta Cancer Foundation’s Patient Financial Assistance Program offers support to eligible patients who have financial needs, addressing some of the direct costs of care, such as travel and accommodations for appointments and medications not covered by insurance. Patients may also use a portion of their funds towards other indirect expenses, such as groceries or utility bills. In 2021, the program assisted 1,229 families and individuals across Alberta. As the number of new cancer cases increases, the need for financial assistance is also expected to increase. With support from our donors, we will continue to offer financial relief, so patients can focus on what matters most: healing.
The Provincial Patient Navigation Program employs registered nurses, or navigators, with specialized training in cancer care to provide guidance to eligible Albertans diagnosed with cancer, and their families. The program promotes equality and accessibility in health-care by focusing on people-centred support for three specific populations of Albertans living with cancer: patients living in rural areas, adolescents and young adults and Indigenous patients. Navigators assist patients with personalized education and health planning, transitions between multiple care providers and centres, and accessing resources and community supports. This critical program has been found to reduce costs to the health-care system by alleviating visits to family physicians and emergency rooms for non-emergent issues.
Alberta is home to 17 Alberta Health Services cancer centres, all leading the way in compassionate care and innovative treatments. As the number of people diagnosed with cancer increases, so does the need to further enhance and expand services available to Albertans facing cancer. By making a gift to the Alberta Cancer Foundation in support of your local cancer centre, you help improve the patient experience through new medical equipment, enhanced treatment and care options, staff wellness initiatives, and specialized training for oncology staff—you help create more moments for Albertans facing cancer.
