Theatres and cultural facilities exist to gather communities to share stories and cultural experiences. The current and necessary ban on gatherings of more than 50 people is devastating to Vancouver arts and culture organizations. A multitude of arts events – plays, musicals, concerts, festivals and more – that have been in the works for months and years have been cancelled. With no events taking place, relied-upon ticket revenue is now non-existent. When the COVID-19 crisis is behind us, we want to ensure these arts organizations that play such a vital role in creating the kinds of communities we want to live in are there for us to come back to when we can.
All gifts given to this Impact Portfolio will be directed towards the following charities:
ARTS CLUB THEATRE COMPANY – The Arts Club is the largest theatre company in Western Canada, tours shows throughout BC and operates three venues in Vancouver. If it no longer existed, the beloved ritual for over a quarter of a million British Columbians to have musicals, comedies, new works and classics would no longer be an ongoing part of their lives.
URBAN INK – One of Vancouver's many powerful Indigenous theatre companies, Urban Ink lifts of Indigenous and diverse voices on stage in productions that may be intimate, spectacular, gut-wrenching, or hilarious. With work that regularly travels across the country, Urban Ink regularly wins awards and critical acclaim for its creations.
VANCOUVER FRINGE FESTIVAL – The Vancouver Fringe Festival is a celebration of all kinds of theatre with over 100 productions in over 20 venues each September. The Vancouver Fringe offers an incredible opportunity for anyone to share their voice and have the experience of doing a show - anyone can be in the Fringe since names of participants are drawn out of a hat!
PRESENTATION HOUSE THEATRE – Located on the North Shore, Presentation House Theatre provides an essential service to those who live just outside the City's core.
