The UNBANKABLE TRUST was inspired by stories from UNBANKABLE Movie and supports informal economic initiatives throughout Africa and North America. For more information on the first recipients, please visit the initiatives and links below. Please GIVE and an automated tax receipt will be issued.

The Banker Ladies

The Banker Ladies Council was set up as part of the Black Social Economy Project, in order to put a stop to the harm and violence against Black women organizers — as well as to highlight the benefits of the Black Social Economy in transforming unequal economic systems in wider society. It all began in April 2020, when 8 Black women from the Greater Toronto Area convened in a home to discuss their shared struggles, challenges, and ideas to improve their lives, and those of their families through long-held, but little known informal mutual aid financial systems. www.bankerladiescouncil.ca

Salama SHIELD Foundation Canada and Malawi

Salama SHIELD Foundation's programs in Malawi implement health and development programs as determined by the objectives of the local people. We primarily work with Malawian women to provide micro-financing funds and education (including the development of a ‘savings culture’). SSF-M is now including greater community-led discussions and programming that address the key concerns raised by our micro-finance clients: gender-relations, food security (permaculture), HIV/AIDS, and schooling for their children. Salama SHIELD Foundation's Canadian initiative, in partnership with Sovereign Core, is a community-based organization that works with vulnerable persons of African descent within the Durham Region, Ontario. The organization addresses gender-based violence, and provides mental health and counselling support -- taking the best practices and processes from our experiences in Sub-Saharan Africa and translating them into Canadian settings. Most recently, this partnership is tackling the rise in domestic violence and gender inequality issues among Sovereign Core’s clients that emerged as a result of COVID-19. www.salamashield.org

The Firestarters

Firestarter helps to move women from the margins to the mainstream of the economy so they can fully benefit from their financial contributions to the economy and communities. FireStarter IDEAS is currently looking to strengthen the governance systems of boards overseeing women's groups engaged in biweekly contributions for capital generation. The next stage is to empower board members with financial management skills, navigating compliance challenges, leading new investors, crafting investment policies, and implementing automated reporting mechanisms for SheHolders, ensuring a robust foundation for sustainable wealth creation specific to how the capital is raised. www.thefirestarter.ca
