Food insecurity has long been a concern amongst vulnerable groups. The Covid-19 crisis has exacerbated the challenge of providing food to those most in need, meaning vulnerable populations are significantly more at risk of food insecurity now than previously.
The number of food vendors and emergency food support locations has nearly halved due to non-profits and charitable organizations being unable to provide food in the ways they traditionally have due to social distancing mandates and unsafe conditions. This leads to organizations needing to quickly adopt new methods of food provision.
A team of students from the Vancouver Social Value Fund and Social Innovation Academy programs, representing both UBC and SFU, are taking time to understand these issues better by holding conversations with those who work in this area already. They are helping to identify the greatest needs in the community, and to learn which organizations are able to make use of charitable donations in this causal issue today. As this work is completed, this Giving Group portfolio will be updated to reflect the understandings gained from these conversations.
Jennifer Johnstone, President & CEO of Central City Foundation (CCF), is also the Impact Ambassador for Food Security in Metro Vancouver. She works with the student teams on an advisory basis to help with selecting the charities that are most effectively addressing the pressing problems related to food security during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Donations to this Giving Group will be directed towards the following charities:

These meals additionally support other nonprofits such as the Overdose Prevention Society. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic ABLF has altered their programs to deliver individually wrapped meals to those in need.
Potluck Cafe Society
Potluck Cafe Society creates jobs and provides healthy meals for people living in the DTES. In response to the current situation, it has focused its efforts on relieving food insecurity amongst residents of the DTES by offering free packaged meals.
