We are a group of Victoria, BC residents sponsoring a young male nursing student from Afghanistan to come to Canada as a refugee. He is a man in his twenties who was forced to flee persecution in his own country. We look forward to welcoming him to Canada.
We are a group of Victoria, BC residents sponsoring a young male nursing student from Afghanistan to come to Canada as a refugee. He is a man in his twenties who was forced to flee persecution in his own country. We look forward to welcoming him to Canada.
Our Purpose
The young man we are sponsoring - "Elias" (a psuedonym) - has been struggling to survive as a refugee in a neighbouring country, living in conditions that are unsafe and frightening and which make him highly vulnerable for life-threatening violence and deportation.
We look forward to welcoming "Elias". to his new home here in Victoria, and to supporting him and helping him find opportunities to continue his studies and create a new life in Canada where he can be safe and thrive.
He writes: “I am someone who has been through a lot, but still have hope for a better future. I want to live in a safe place where I can be myself without fear. I dream of continuing my education, finding a stable job, and building a peaceful life in Canada.”
Part of our commitment is to raise enough money to support A for the the first year after his arrival. Thank you so very much for any help you can offer. Please donate if you can!
How to Help
We need to raise 27,000 to cover the cost of "Elias'" housing and other living expenses for his first year here.
Donating to support "Elias" is offering a form of care that will make a life-and-death difference. Thank you so much for anything amount that you can share.
All the money donated through this web page will be sent to our group's account with the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria and will be used to support this refugee after his arrival. Any amount helps - it all adds up and gets us closer to our goal.
Please ask your friends to help too! Share this link with your networks. All Canadian donors will receive tax receipts for their donations. Whatever you share becomes part of the fund that will help "Elias" get escape persecution, find safety, and create a new life here.
Folks from outside Canada can also donate! We appreciate your generosity! (please note that we are not able to offer tax receipts for donations from outside Canada).
A local Victoria nonprofit will be our sponsorship Agreement Holder Agency. Any funds raised in excess of the budget will be used for the sponsorship of other refugees at the discretion of this nonprofit.
The refugee process for "Elias" is also in partnership with a Rainbow program.
About the Organizers
We are a diverse group of 8 Victoria residents, aged 50 to 85. Some of us work in health care and mental health care, some of us are musicians, dancers, and artists, some of us are working and some are retired. Some of us were born in Canada and some are recent newcomers.
We are a group of people who have come together for this focused purpose because we want to make a significant difference for a person who feels alone in the world and deeply needs people to help.
