Now is the time to turn the tides on ocean threats.

The Group's Purpose

The oceans produce 70% of the oxygen we breathe and control the planet's temperature and weather. No matter how near or far from an ocean you live... no oceans, no us.

I’ve dedicated half of my life to ocean conservation as a marine biologist, studying endangered marine animals around the world for different governments and universities. When I finished my PhD, I realized over 30 of the species that I’ve studied or interacted with will go extinct within my lifetime. I couldn’t see a direct link between my research and the immediate conservation action needed.

I believe strongly in the power of individual action to create positive change and I wanted to share my experiences with youth who still have a whole lifetime to create positive change for our oceans. This is why I started Sea Smart.

Our oceans need our help now. They are getting warmer and more acidic, coral reefs are dying, fish populations are collapsing, and many countries are treating the ocean like a waste basket.

Now is the time to turn the tides on ocean threats.

How to Help

Contribute to this Impact Portfolio and know that your gifts are being sent to the charities making the most impact in providing innovative & urgent solutions for our oceans.

The Ocean Heroes portfolio includes charities that tackle ocean threats from different focuses, including: stewardship education, policy changes and environmental law. I support each of these charities as a monthly donor and bequests in my will.

Sea Smart: Full disclosure - I am the founder and ED of Sea Smart. Sea Smart's mission is to inspire and empower people to love and protect our oceans. Through innovative, action-oriented and solution-based education programs, Sea Smart empowers hundreds of thousands of people across Canada - and the world - to become ocean heroes.

Georgia Strait Alliance (GSA): GSA's mission is to protect and restore the marine environment and promote the sustainability of Georgia Strait, its adjoining waters, and communities. GSA collaborates with individuals, businesses and government to seek solutions to the problems and issues that threaten the marine environment of the Strait of Georgia.

Ecojustice: Using the power of law, Ecojustice goes to court to defend nature, combat climate change and fight for your right to a healthy environment. As Canada’s largest environmental law charity, Ecojustice leads the legal fight for a brighter future and thanks to the supporters, represent their clients free of charge.
