Parenting a child or teen who's struggling emotionally or behaviourally can be very overwhelming and isolating, especially if you’re not able to access psychological support, which is the case for the majority of Canadians. Mental health struggles are also stressful for kids & teens themselves. For a child struggling with school anxiety, for example, getting to school can feel as daunting as biking across the entire country. I'm biking in solidarity with the parents & young people who are facing seemingly insurmountable situations by tackling a seemingly insurmountable task myself. Knowing that you're not alone makes hard things feel a little bit easier. We may not get to the other side quickly or smoothly, and doing anything in uncertainty is scary, but I believe that bit by bit, day by day, progress can be made. With some support and the right tools, you can be miles from where you started.
All money raised goes to charities that are working specifically to fund mental health services & resources for kids, teens, and their families.
These charities have been carefully chosen for the excellent work that they do, & more will be added until there is a representation for every province & territory. Once a new charity is confirmed, it will be listed here. Funds raised are held at Charitable Impact until the end of the ride, at which point funds get distributed across all of the chosen charities.

Waiting a long time for needed mental health services is far from ideal. Delayed intervention is associated with increased symptom severity, reduced functioning, lower quality of life and worse long term outcomes.
This is true whether we are talking about adults or kids. BUT, when it comes to kids and teens, there are two added problems:
1. Youth are constantly growing and changing, and there are different "tasks" that are part of each developmental stage. Psychological and emotional problems (depending on how impactful they are) can get in the way of learning & practicing important social & life skills, which then in turn creates new challenges.
2. Delayed intervention is stressful for parents, and over time it may lower their ability to cope. As it turns out, parents matter. And their wellbeing matters too.
RAISE AWARENESS: How great would it be if everyone in this country knew that: effective psychological treatments exist! Kids can get better & parents can feel sturdier & more confident. There is so much hope for young people who are struggling mentally & emotionally. Even though there are treatments that work, most kids & families don't have access to them.
FUNDRAISE. There are charities across Canada doing amazing work to directly fun mental health services. Variety BC is one of them, and they recently had to limit their service options because "demand for requests continue to grow at an overwhelming rate". By donating financially, we can support organizations across the country to say "yes" to more kids & teens
SHARE KNOWLEDGE. Psychoeducation is a key ingredient in many of the therapies that we know work. This means that when it comes to mental health & resilience, knowledge really is power. For example, research shows that truly understanding how anxiety works and affects the body and brain can ON ITS OWN help people feel better. I will share what I know while I am riding across Canada this summer. If you are on a long waitlist, you can #learnwhileyouwait
