Following a lifetime track record of sailing successes in her own right, Isabella credits her experiences as a competitive sailor and her own personal development to sailing.
With notable achievements including:
• Youngest sailor, at 13 years-old to be named to the Senior Canadian National Team,
• Two world cup medals,
• Countless top 10 international performances,
• 4th at the ISAF Youth World Championships,
• Two-time recipient of the Canadian Female Sailor of the year award,
• A career high world ranking of 2nd,
• Countless cultural experiences, and admission to the Sauder School of Business.
“Sailing made me who I am”, she joked. “All of the long training days, the highs and the lows, and all of the characters who passed on their life experience— I am a sailor”.
She fell into the sport of sailing when her single-mother signed her up for sailing school at the age of five, “My mom needed to keep me busy whilst she was working, little did she know that this would be such a life-changing decision,” says Isabella. “I fell into the sport of sailing by chance and by age 13 I qualified for the Senior National team.”
Her family’s situation meant that much of her early development was subsidised through BC Sailing, and the support of generous donors who believed not only in her as a sailor, but also as an individual. High performance sailing is an expensive sport with equipment, travel, coaching and access to training groups adding to costs. “All of my early training was dependent on BC Sailing and its financial supporters.”
“The skills and experiences I had as an elite athlete have shaped me into the person that I am today. My athletic achievements helped me earn admission to the Sauder School of Business, and my success on the international stage opened career doors.
“I am very grateful or those experiences and for the support I received and now I want to give back to the next generation of youth sailors” Isabella says. Provincial team programming is dependent on government funding and donations, and Isabella will personally be donating annually, as well as donating her time toward provincial team camps.
She says the purpose of the fund is to encourage her long-time supporters to continue their legacy supporting sailors and to lay a path for new contributors. “I hope that you will join me in supporting ambitious individual’s sailing goals”.
