Kris Archie is the CEO of The Circle on Philanthropy, a registered charity whose programs promote giving, sharing, and philanthropy in Aboriginal communities across the country. Her Indigenous solutions for change are solutions that all people in communities need for education, child welfare, climate justice, and taking profound action. Indigenous solutions benefit everyone.
Kris previously led Vancouver Foundation’s Fostering Change program which supports the transition for youth who are leaving foster care into their adult years. As someone who was raised in kinship care and acted as a foster parent for her own siblings, Kris takes the responsibility we have for the next generation very seriously. Her career and activism have been focused on what she can do to contribute to the world and providing increased access, justice, and equitability for young people and generations to come.
Kris’ expertise and passion extend across the country, but the geographic focus of the ChooseYourImpact campaign has empowered her to build an Impact Portfolio of organizations providing innovative & pressing solutions specific to Metro Vancouver. The charities included in her portfolio work at the intersection of supporting children, youth, and mothers who have been impacted by international trauma and child welfare intervention. These individuals are at increased risk during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, each of the charities selected has strong stability and are already showing up and getting to work with helping local community members be safe during this time.
All of the funds given to Kris’ Impact Portfolio will be directed to the charities below. She is also actively involved in conversations with other charities to assess their readiness to accept funding and support.
Lu’ma Native Housing Society's Aboriginal youth mentorship program provides an exceptional transition program for young people existing out of foster care. They create a sense of home and family, and have been doing fantastic work for many years.
The Aboriginal Mother Centre specifically serves the needs of mothers at risk of losing their children to welfare or are in the process of getting their children back. Their housing program provides women and their children with a place to stay and receive support for increasing their parenting skills. On-site daycare and educational partnerships with local organizations help young women get up on their feet and breaking the cycle of intergenerational removal of children.
Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Centre Association works with an amazing group of young people advocating for Indigenous housing support in Surrey, where the population of Indigenous people is growing significantly. They provide a grassroots lifeline for the community and require ongoing support to continue their important mission.
Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre offers a safe space for Indigenous and racialized women and children from the conditions of poverty and violence around them. The DTES Women’s Center provides women & children with their basic necessities, individual long-term support, education, advocacy, peer mentorship and exposure to alternatives. When you support one woman, you are supporting the deepening of an entire community.
Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society exists to meet the needs of the urban Aboriginal People making a transition to the urban community. They require urgent support to remain open.
Kris Archie is the Impact Ambassador for Indigenous communities who are already at high risk of poverty, addiction, and violence. When you contribute to her portfolio, your gift takes on the impact informed by her expertise, passion, and relentless advocacy for a more equitable and just future for Aboriginal communities and Canadians.
