Lack of hygiene and sanitation can lead to the spread of disease and can even cause death. The Household WASH project is designed to enable families in rural Cambodia and a neighbouring Restricted Access Nation (RAN) to access safe water, hygiene education and sanitation facilities.

About Asian Outreach

Asian Outreach (AO) is a Christian, non-governmental organization that has been empowering and transforming the lives of families in needy communities across Asia for more than 40 years. Operating in 18 countries across the continent, AO works with local partners to bring holistic and sustainable development to the most vulnerable areas.

We focus on the training and support of national workers – as they are best equipped to effect change within their own communities. We work alongside and empower the local church; our goal is to see a vibrant local church central to community life.

Our projects are providing equal opportunities to access to education, safe water, hygiene and sanitation. We are committed to ensuring that all people have the opportunity to lead healthy, productive lives. We are confident that by continuing to work together, we can make a lasting difference across Asia.

Situation and Needs

Cambodia and the RAN have made impressive progress in increasing access to latrines and improving household sanitation practices. However, there are still many rural households that do not have any access to these facilities and the proper training.

Without latrines, women and girls in particular face many challenges. They often have to defecate in the forest or rice fields, and some of them do so at night. This can be very dangerous for them, as it makes them vulnerable to attacks and rape. Latrines help keep families healthy by preventing the spread of disease. They also provide privacy and dignity, especially for women and girls. Women and girls also face the daily challenge of obtaining water for cooking and drinking. In addition to being unsafe to drink, this water is often scarce and difficult to access, leaving them with no choice but to travel long distances to obtain.

A household that lacks hygiene and sanitation can be difficult to live in. It can be hard to keep things clean, and there may be health risks associated with living in unsanitary conditions. These families suffer constant illness which result in interruptions to education and severe economic loss.

Program Description

The project includes activities to provide families and communities with basic hygiene knowledge, promote responsible use of facilities, and to take ownership of their own health care. Inadequate WASH in the homes is one of the biggest causes of disease in Cambodia and the RAN's rural communities.

Women, girls, and young children are disproportionately affected by the public health crisis. To break this cycle, we have developed a unique hygiene-focused approach that helps with latrine improvements and handwashing facilities along with the water ceramic filter for rural households.

Our program focuses on providing clean water to families and constructing latrines to improve their overall hygiene. This dual and integrated focus of clean water and sanitation is essential to improving the sustainable health of families and communities.

Project Components

*To bring clean water and sanitation (including a ceramic water filter and latrine) to 500 homes in Cambodia and the RAN - 250 in northern Cambodia and 250 in the RAN.

*To drill 10-12 community hand pump wells.

*To rebuild 2 very dilapidated schools in the RAN.

*To distribute Feminine Hygiene Kits so that young ladies do not have to miss school during menstruation. Too often, this leads to them not returning to school at all.

Project Goals

We are hoping to raise $150,000 CAD. Note: we have already raised half of this thanks to other partners.

Here's how you can help:

*$20 will supply a young lady with a Feminine Hygiene Kit.

*$70 will supply a water filter system for each home.

*$250 will supply all the materials for a home latrine. Each family will be responsible for digging their own hole and helping with the construction.

*The cost for each well depends on the location and the depth. Estimates are $1,500 - $2,500.

*It will cost $30,000 - $40,000 to rebuild the two schools. Our goal is not just to construct new schools, but to also equip them with the resources they need for each classroom.
