For over 10 years, I've talked about chopping my locks for charity. Now that I've turned 40, it's time to stop talking and start doing.

My loss will be a child's gain as I will be donating my hair and these funds to Wigs 4 Kids BC.

The Group's Purpose

On March 25th, I will be cutting at least 10 inches of my hair and donating it to Wigs for Kids BC, a program out of BC Children's Hospital. In 2009, W4K expanded its mandate beyond wigs to include funding for essential drugs and feeding supplies for children that are not covered by MSP.

The wigs are given to children with cancer or other serious illnesses completely free of charge. All costs for the wigs are covered by Wigs for Kids. Every cent collected as a charity goes to the children as W4K is completely volunteer run with no overhead. As well as the wigs, W4K funding covers feeding tubes and feeding supplies for children with cancer that are able to go home from the hospital but require the feeding supplies. Families without extended health benefits require funding as the B.C. Government does not cover these through MSP once the child leaves the hospital.

For more information on Wigs 4 Kids, check out their website http://www.wigsforkidsbc.com.

One wig costs $3,000, but with hair donations, like mine, the cost is $800 to cover the labour.

My goal is to raise enough money to cover the cost of 1 wig ($3,000).

I will personally match the first $1000 in donations so every donation counts!

UPDATE: Since I reached my goal of $3000, my new goal is $4200. The additional $1200 will cover the cost of feeding supplies for a child for a month.

How to Help

First, thank you for wanting to help!

Here are a few ways you can help:

1. Join the group and follow me on my hair-cutting journey!
2. Donate any amount - the first $500 are matched by yours truly.
3. Spread the word. Wigs 4 Kids is not the only organization that does this, but the more people that know about it, the more we can collectively help.

About the Organizers

Hey, I'm Linda! I'm a runner, a community lover, and I feel it's my personal duty to give back.

I just turned 40 this year, and I've had long hair since I was 15 years old. I've said for many years that the only way I would cut my hair is to donate it to charity - so it's time to make it happen. And, make it a zero cost to that charity.
