Group Admins
We are raising money to sponsor Salwa's family to resettle in Victoria, BC, Canada. All funds will go to the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria to sponsor this family.
The Group's Purpose
Salwa and her parents, Abdullah and Fatma are from Saraqib, in Idlib province, Syria, where Abdullah owned a small internet business.
Salwa was born during the war. The hospital where she was born was bombed, but thankfully she and her mother were not hurt. Her father's business and their family home were both bombed, and the family was internally displaced for two years, trying to find a safe place away from the bombs and the Syrian army.
After the "laughing girl" video went viral in 2019, the Turkish government allowed the family to cross the border. They are now in a Turkish border town. While they are safe from the war, there are very few opportunities, and with no official status, no real future for Salwa and her family.
Salwa's father Abdullah has friends in Victoria, BC, and we are now working to sponsor the family to move to Canada.
How to Help
You can help in two ways:
1. We need volunteers who live in Victoria, BC to officially sponsor the family with us. This is a big commitment, but an incredibly meaningful experience. Together as sponsors, we will get everything ready for the family's arrival, and support them during the first year of their new life in Canada. The friendships will last a lifetime. 2. We need to raise $40,000 in order to support the family for their first year in Canada while they learn English and settle into their new life. Your donation - whether large or small - will have a huge impact, and 100% of the money raised will directly support Salwa's family.* Please give generously.
*100% of the money raised will be transferred to the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA) for the private sponsorship of Salwa's family. Should we raise more funds than are needed, or should the sponsorship not proceed for any reason, the funds will be used to support other privately sponsored refugees through the ICA. The ICA does not take any percentage for administrative costs, and our group receives no financial benefits.

We are small but mighty! Bishr, a friend of Abdullah's, who came to Canada as a sponsored refugee in 2019, and Joanna, a friend and private sponsor of refugees. Join us!
