To provide a meaningful music experience at YWCA Crabtree Corner for mothers and children facing poverty barriers in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside through the magic of Music Together. Music supports all learning and we can give children a leg up in their development by giving them access to a weekly community music class and an award winning, take home musical curriculum. We also want to give parents an opportunity to bond with their little ones and find connections with other families through singing, dance, and musical play. Music can bring us together when we are faced with the struggles of supporting our family in times of hardship.
Here are a few of the beautiful moments that our teacher has already witnessed in her classes at YWCA Crabtree Corner:
"One mom has told me that she hears her son singing our songs in the stroller and at home. Today, for the first time, he sat on my lap for the dyad and danced with me during our free dance. At the beginning of term, he was very attached to Mom, but today I observed him venturing away in a way that shows me he feels safe, secure, and comfortable in our circle. I feel certain this program is valuable to Mom, especially the opportunity to be part of a supportive music-making community."
"In spite of a hearing impairment, I've heard a little girl spontaneously sing in class many times. She moves around the classroom with confidence and respect for others and enthusiastically participates in our rituals. Her mom has expressed an interest in attending the WSMT Winter Ball with her family and connecting with our broader Music Together community.”
"At the beginning of our term, another little girl clung to Mom and didn't actively participate in music-making. Today I observed her smiling gleefully with anticipation during the pauses in our music-making! She now sits with our YWCA assistant regularly giving Mom one-on-one time with her son."
There are lots of ways, big and small, to offer women and their families the gift of Music Together at our YWCA Downtown Eastside program:
1) A donation of any size $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 - every little bit helps
2) Consider donating a full tuition of $170 for one family
3) Give the gift of music at your next birthday party and use our funding page to provide a term (or more!) of music for a family on the downtown east side
4) Know a family, a business, or an office pool that would be interested in donating a considerable and gracious amount? Pass the link for our page on to bigger funding bodies:
West Side Music Together was born after I attended Music Together classes with my niece in California in 2001 and was inspired to bring Music Together to Vancouver in 2004. We all have a birthright to learn the basics of music making. It allows us to bond with our family and our community and supports so much of our development cognitively and emotionally. We want to share this Music Together opportunity with moms on the downtown east side so they can experience the joys of family music making.
