Welcome to the Vancouver Avian Research Centre (VARC).


Vancouver Avian Research Centre (VARC) was established in 2009. At that time its only focus was to conduct bird research at its Banding Station in Colony Farm Regional Park ƛ̓ éxətəm (tla-hut-um) Regional Park), in Coquitlam, BC.


Since then, however, it has used both its bird banding and research activities at the station and its profile in the community to stimulate interest in science, nature and, most importantly, conservation in elementary schools, universities, youth groups and the public.


Through engaging with birds in the hand at the banding station, joining us on bird walks, speaking with us at many of our community events or enjoying our online programming, individuals learn about the science around our birds and are encouraged to foster an interest in science, nature and conservation. Birds are an excellent tool because they are easily accessible to everyone.


In addition to VARC’s popular Schools & Children's Programming, Volunteer Program and Banding Training, the organization offers upward of 70 opportunities each year for the public to learn about birds and to become engaged in their wellbeing and conservation.


Different events focus on different demographics. If there is an opportunity to engage people in the science of birds, VARC will attend and provide information not only on how the birds are declining but also the things people can do to help stem this decline.


VARC's nearly 200 volunteers help in delivering all its programs and support the students who use it as an opportunity to further their careers and their studies.
