Students who get a poor start in reading rarely catch up. Struggling with learning to read can be emotionally and mentally exhausting for children. It affects nearly every aspect of their school experience such as academic success, relationships with peers and their feelings of self-worth.

ONE TO ONE Literacy Society provides free literacy programming to help struggling young readers develop essential literacy skills to benefit them for a lifetime. Developing high literacy levels is an ongoing process starting from a young age and its importance often overlooked. A high level of literacy proficiency has a holistic effect on academic success, physical and mental health, and future economic standing. Together, we can create a significant impact by investing in literacy at an early age.

Since our inception in 1989, we have impacted the lives of over 30,000 young readers by providing in-school literacy tutoring to help them develop not only reading skills, but also increased confidence and self-esteem. Developing young readers receive focused time and attention from a caring and patient trained literacy volunteer to help them achieve reading success. During the 2019-2020 school year, we were able to support 211 schools and close to 3,000 emerging young readers.

The pandemic fundamentally shifted ONE TO ONE’s ability to serve struggling readers and we have pivoted our efforts to accommodate virtual programming. In the past year, we have worked closely with schools and community organizations to provide virtual in-school literacy tutoring sessions, after-school virtual tutoring and workshops for parents.

ONE TO ONE’s programs are available at no cost to students or schools within British Columbia. We are entirely funded through a supportive community of foundations, grants and generous donors like you. A gift to ONE TO ONE allows us to connect more qualified volunteer tutors with children who would benefit from additional support.
