We are at an important crossroads for nature conservation in Canada. For the first time in over 20 years, provincial, territorial, indigenous and federal governments are focused and collaborating on creating new protected areas. This unified effort was spawned by the UN Convention on Biological Diversity target of protecting 17% of our land and 10% of our oceans by 2020. Canada currently sits at 10% and 1%. CPAWS worked tirelessly in the last few years to make this a government priority and our success means we must now turn to implementation.
CPAWS is the most effective and qualified organization to seize the current conservation opportunity and deliver outcomes. We were made for this.
CPAWS is Canada’s only nation-wide charity focused exclusively on the protection of public land and water. 90% of Canada’s land and 100% of our oceans are public. If we are to reach these ambitious targets by 2020 and drive to what nature needs beyond that, public land and ocean conservation is the only path to success in Canada.
CPAWS has been Canada’s most effective conservation organization, leading in the creation of more than half a million square kilometres of protected areas.
