Mission Statement
The Canadian International Freedom of Expression Trust, operating as Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE), exists to defend and protect the right to free expression. Its mission is to monitor, defend, and report on free expression and access to information both in Canada and abroad. CJFE, rooted in journalism, promotes a free media as vital for a fair and open society. It boldly champions the free expression rights of all people and supports individuals and groups in protecting their own and others’ rights to speak freely.

Geographic Focus
CJFE is based in Toronto and operates throughout Canada, but its work extends far beyond national borders. The organization actively addresses free expression issues both domestically and internationally. CJFE collaborates with partners worldwide and is a founding member of global networks, such as the International Free Expression eXchange (IFEX), ensuring its advocacy reaches global communities as well as Canadians.

Program Highlights
Key CJFE programs include monitoring and reporting on freedom of expression and press freedom, both in Canada and internationally. The organization supports journalists and media workers through initiatives like the Journalists in Distress program, providing assistance to those facing threats because of their work.
