The AASEA promotes the formation and ongoing training of spiritual directors in Ignatian spirituality. We maintain the professional competence of spiritual directors through conferences and educational programs. We offer a training program to prepare men and women for ministry as prayer companions. Local groups of the Association in Cape Breton, Halifax, Prince Edward Island, and Saint John offer continuing formation for members. We co-ordinate individual and communal spiritual direction, offer retreats, and facilitate faith-sharing as a service to the local church in different geographical areas. We hold an Annual General meeting to transact Association business, elect a governing body, and review finances. We engage guest speakers at a yearly conference to upgrade the knowledge and skills of members. We offer financial support to members or other applicants to attend other workshops, conferences or retreats, both within and outside of the Maritime provinces, which are aimed at developing prayer companion / spiritual direction skills.
