Art Metropole (AM) is a not-for-profit corporation incorporated under the laws of the province of Ontario,pursuing a focus on the production,dissemination and contextulization of artist-initiated publication in any media,especially those formats and practices predisposed to sharing and circulation. AM is a registered charity #12287 1270RR0001,a member of the Canadian Museum Association (CMA),and the Art Librarians Society of North America (ARLI/NA),as well as the Artist-Run Centres and Collectives of Ontario (ARCCO). AM was founded in 1974 as a division of Art Official Inc.(publisher of FILEMegazine) by the artists' collective General Idea.AM's mission statement was articulated as follows: "To collect,document,preserve,promote,and dispere contemporary art in non-traditional multiple media formats, information thereon, and to carry on all such activities as support these objectives. " The Organization collects, documents, preserves, promotes and disperses contemporary Canadian and international art.
After 25 years in a hard-to-find walk up location,AM reopened its doors at 1490 Dundas Street West,in Toronto's Little Portugal neighbourhood,on August 1,2012.The accessible new storefront location enables chance encounters and is situated in a neighbourhood where many artists and collaborators thatAM represents are based,amongst other communities. The Art Metropole shop-iincluding its Window Projects and display space--serves local, national andinternational communities of artists,writers, researchers, independent publishers,and other cultural producers,working with emerging,mid-career,and professional artists.It is open to the public Wednesday to Saturday 12-7 pm Window Projects are accessible beyond Am's opening hours,visible from the outside 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
