Amnesty International plays a role in the international protection of human rights. The organization takes action to stop grave abuses of rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination.
Amnesty's programs tent to be ongoing rather than new. In recent years, the organization has focused on the rights of indigenous peoples, corporate accountability with respect to human rights, and the need for human rights to be considered when security issues are addressed. We also focus on freeing prisoners of conscience, protecting refugees, abolishing the death penalty, ending political killings, disappearances, torture, and other grave human right abuses, as well as defending women's human rights.
