Scientists are raising the alarm. The humidity levels of the Amazon are dropping. The wet-adapted tree species and the animals that live there are in crisis. The Amazon rainforest has reached a tipping point and is being reduced to a degraded savannah. Essentially, the Amazon rainforest is dying.
Should we care? Yes, we should care. A lot.
We've witnessed the destruction first hand. We've seen vast areas of rainforest destroyed by logging and slash and burn farming. We've visited illegal gold mining camps that have transformed pristine wilderness into mercury polluted “moonscapes”. We've walked on roads which cut through previously remote and inaccessible areas where indigenous people live in voluntary isolation.
The death of the Amazon will release massive amounts of carbon leading to extreme weather events and disease outbreaks – which we’re already experiencing. The reduction in rainfall will lead to water and food shortages, and mass extinctions of plant and animal species affecting families and economies worldwide. So yes, …it’s serious.
It’s more important than ever that we stand together to protect and defend what’s left of the Amazon Rainforest.
Protecting the remote areas where ARC’s conservation projects are located is challenging. The gold miners, loggers and poachers know the governmental environmental police lack the resources to patrol and enforce the law in these remote areas.
We’ve learned to protect the endangered wildlife and tree species that live on our lands, we must have a constant presence there. We need forest rangers to live on ARC’s lands to maintain an extensive trail network and patrol to keep out invaders.
Your donation to this campaign not only helps save some of the Amazon’s most vulnerable wildlife and tree species; it changes the lives of rainforest families. The lack of legitimate jobs is what drives many rainforest dwellers to turn to illegal activities to feed their families. Just $15,000 CDN per year pays the salary of one forest ranger to keep illegal loggers, miners and poachers out of ARC’s lands.
Make one of the most meaningful investments you can make for future generations.
Remember, ARC is a low-overhead philanthropy staffed by volunteers in Canada, so all donations go directly to protecting the Amazon rainforest.
Only 15,000. That’s how few jaguars remain safe in the wild. Their last refuge is in the Amazon basin yet even there they are far from safe. In an effort to protect these beautiful animals, Amazon Rainforest Conservancy is creating a jaguar corridor in the valley between the two mountain ranges of Peru’s Cordillera Escalera Regional Park. The corridor is critical to providing jaguars a safe passage between these mountain ranges. Passage that is otherwise threatened by ranchers who shoot them on sight out of fear for their cattle.
Your donation will go toward ARC purchasing and reforesting land in this valley. With the valley being 3,500 ha in size, our dream is to turn the entire valley into a conservation corridor and unite the fragmented habitat for the wildlife living here. Yes, it’s a big dream but it all starts one hectare at a time. Together we can ensure our children and grandchildren live in a world where jaguars still live free in the wild.
