Founded in 1976, SportAbility is a registered charity (1982) which provides physical activity programs for individuals with a disability across British Columbia, Canada. SportAbility offers programs in four sports including Sledge Hockey, Boccia, Power Soccer, and 7 A-Side Soccer at both recreational and competitive levels. SportAbility is a non-profit, volunteer-driven association whose goal is to create a fun and safe social environment for athletes with a disability, who are either being introduced to an activity for the first time, or competing at an international level.

Sledge Hockey is a fun, fast paced adapted game of Hockey, which is played by both individuals with a disability and those who are able bodied. Join in this fundraising event to support SportAbility develop Sledge Hockey programs throughout BC.

All proceeds from the Sledge Hockey Showdown (registration fees, games, skills competition and silent auction) will go towards having a sledge hockey development camp in the new year geared towards athletes of all ability levels across BC.

Sledge Hockey is an international Paralympic sport played by athletes with physical disabilities. Players sit in custom designed aluminum sleds (sledges) with skates mounted on the base and have two short hockey sticks, equipped with metal picks on the butt end to propel the sleds across the ice. Sledge Hockey follows the same rules as able-bodied hockey and is an equally competitive and aggressive sport.

About the Showdown!

SportAbility is working in partnership with the City of Surrey and the Hockey North America League to host the Sledge Hockey Showdown! The Showdown is SportAbility’s largest fundraiser, raising money for the development of Sledge Hockey.

This unique tournament invites participants who are both able bodied and have a disability to enter teams of eight and show off their hockey skills for the day on a sled. The event is a perfect opportunity to promote team building in your workplace, or for you and your friends to have a lot of fun! The environment is friendly and aims to build community spirit as well as support an interest in Sledge Hockey and SportAbility.

Each team is allocated with a coach, who is an existing sledge hockey player. The Showdown celebrates the True Sport Principles of Sport in every aspect and it is an excellent example of how sport can be used as a tool to positively influence attitudes towards people with disabilities. The event is also an example of local organizations and individual’s being able to give back to their community and sport, via monetary donations and donated prizes.
